Internet & wifi

Wifi and internet is widely available in cities, hotels and most restaurants and bars. However, internet coverage becomes more limited when travelling to more rural areas. If you want to stay connected, you will have to purchase a Sim card for your device.

Tourists can choose from a variety of providers, including Deutsche Telekom with their MagentaMobile Prepaid SIM (different data plans available), O2 with several prepaid Sim options, and Vodafone with their CallYa Prepaid SIM Card (different data plans available).

If travelling to more than one country within the EU, check out Orange, O2 or Vodafone for their European prepaid Sim card deals.

In 2017, the EU made roaming fees illegal within the EU (this only applies if using a provider from a EU country), and users can use their phones at domestic rates without paying for excessive roaming rates.

Sim cards can either be purchased in stores or via the company’s websites.

Getting around

Sitting between two major aviation hubs (Frankfurt and Munich), Stuttgart is lacking a great number of intercontinental long haul flights (currently only Atlanta in the US and Dubai in the UAE). However, Stuttgart is extremely well connected to European destinations and the airport is served by both classic airlines as well as low-cost budget carriers. The airport has excellent connections to public transport, including bus service, the S-Bahn and U-Bahn, and the Stuttgart Long Distance Bus Terminal is also located on its grounds.

The Stuttgart Airport Bus Terminal - SAB - is a modern travel hub with excellent connections to all transport networks and many destinations within Germany and Europe.

Stuttgart is an integral part of Europe's railway lines, and the city is well connected to destinations within Germany and the continent.

VVS Public Transport Association provides an extensive network of lines with integrated timetables and effective connections to the travelling public. VVS tickets can be used on all underground and commuter trains, trams, buses, the rack railway and the funicular cable car. VVS's uniform tariffs are valid throughout Stuttgart as well as its neighbouring districts. Please check the VVS’s day passes and family tickets for cheaper fares if you are planning to use the public transport a lot.

Money

Germany uses the Euro as its currency. Credit cards are accepted at restaurants and bigger stores, but expect to pay cash in smaller shops and street markets. Cash can be obtained from ATM/cash machines.

Safety

Germany in general is a safe country for visitors to travel. However, some precaution and common sense is advised. As everywhere, single woman and man should be cautious at night and avoid dark streets and isolated places in cities.

Medical & healthcare

Medical facilities in Germany are good, and hospitals, doctors and dental clinics can be found everywhere, even in more isolated rural areas.

It is recommended to obtain a travel health insurance before traveling to Germany to cover any eventual costs.

Visas & immigration

EU nationals do not require a visa to enter the Federal Republic of Germany and can stay as long as they wish to.

A visa is not required for visits of up to 90 days in an 180‑day period for nationals of those countries for which the European Community has abolished the visa requirement.

Citizens of Schengen countries can cross the internal borders of all member states without passport checks. The Schengen visa entitles the holder to visits of up to 90 days every 6 months in the entire Schengen area.

In order to enter Germany, visitors need to show proof of a double Covid-19 vaccination, as well as a negative PCR Test not older than 72 hours when entering.
